  Description Meriwether Lewis Elementary is looking to begin a French FLES program next school year. The French Foreign Language in Elementary School (FLES) teacher provides immersive and interactive French language instruction for students in elementary school. The French FLES teacher collaborates closely with classroom teachers to reinforce a school culture of multilingualism and designs lessons that build language through connections to classroom learning.
  Requirements Essential Functions:
The minimum performance expectations include, but are not limited to, the following actions:
Demonstrates oral and written fluency in English and French;
Meets and instructs the students(s) in English and French at the locations and time designated;
Attends grade level meetings to co-plan lessons and multilingual instruction;
Develops and maintains the physical environment of the classroom that is conducive to effective learning across multiple languages within the limits of resources provided by the system;
Prepares for classes assigned and shows evidence of preparation upon request of the immediate supervisor;
Encourages students to set and maintain high standards of classroom behavior; Provides an effective program of instruction to include:
Instructional skills;
Knowledge of child growth and development, including bilingual development;
Knowledge and use of materials and resources in accordance with the adopted curriculum and consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided;
Demonstrates mastery of content area;
Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities;
Maintains and upholds school and county policies and procedures;
Maintains records as required by law, system policy, and administrative regulations;
Assists in upholding and enforcing school rules and administrative regulations.
Makes provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes within contractual commitments;
Attends and participates in faculty and department meetings;
Cooperates with other members of the staff in planning instructional goals, objectives, and methods;
Assists in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials;
Works to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students, parents, and colleagues concerning both the academic and behavioral progress of all students;
Establishes and maintains cooperative professional relations with others;
Performs related duties as assigned by the administration in accordance with the school/system policies and practices.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
The French FLES teacher must be biliterate in English and French and demonstrate knowledge of bilingual development in children.

Education and Experience:
Candidates must hold or be eligible for a Virginia teaching certificate with endorsement in Elementary, ESOL and/or French. Candidates should have an endorsement in French or be willing to attain one upon hire.

French Teacher – Secondary Level

To motivate each student to develop competencies, knowledge and skills in aurally comprehending, speaking, reading and writing the designated language in accordance with each student’s ability; to interpret to pupils the culture of the countries where the language is spoken in order to facilitate a thorough understanding and appreciation the specified peoples and countries.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Comprehensive knowledge of current practices, techniques, and methods of teaching to secondary pupils.
2. Effective use of strategies that result in students being able to demonstrate aural comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing as related to the language.
3. Develops lesson plans that consistently reflect the importance of active student engagement and higher level thinking skills.
4. Provides learning experiences which develop the basic communication skills, utilizing audio recording devices or other equipment as appropriate.
5. Provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of the students.
6. Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to ensure a productive and safe learning environment.
7. Evaluates student progress in aural comprehension, speaking, reading and writing the language in relationship to the level being taught.
8. Selects and requisitions books, instructional aids, and instructional supplies and maintains required inventory records.
9. Communicates with parents and school counselors on student progress.
10. Communicates appropriately with students, co-workers, and administration.
11. Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in helping students resolve concerns.
12. Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs.
13. Supervises students in out-of-class activities during the assigned work day.
14. Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities.
15. Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.
16. Participates cooperatively with the appropriate administrator to gain a clear understanding of the method by which he/she will be evaluated in conformance with district and State guidelines.
17. Performs other duties as determined by the school board.

Master’s Degree preferred.
One year of teaching experience at the secondary level or its equivalency preferred.
Strong written and oral communication skills.
